Gary and I were colleagues at the Contra Costa Times during a major East Bay circulation campaign by the San Francisco Chronicle. I kept fingers crossed for years in hopes they wouldn't realize they could gain far more readers by luring Gary away from the Times than by discounting subscription rates.
I'm sorry I'll be traveling on the day people gather to remember Gary. I've thought of him often in the years since we worked together, most recently when I adopted from Community Concern for Cats. That terrific East Bay rescue organization might never have existed without Gary's help. I wish I'd called that day to thank him, not only for his CC4C contributions, but for all the causes that flourished because of his work. His legacy will remain both in the hearts of his family and friends and in the many community institutions that he enhanced.
